Ecotopian House Renderings
The Ecotopian House is a collaboration between the Housing Assistance Corporation and the Boston Architectural College to design and build a home for the administrator of an affordable and sustainable post-homeless community currently under development.
The Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the housing needs of the people of Cape Cod. The HAC’s vision is to provide a community where everyone has a safe, stable and decent place to live. This vision will be realized in the Community Green, a proposed affordable housing development where people who were formerly homeless or have lower incomes can live, learn, work and grow in an environmentally and economically sustainable setting.
The Boston Architectural College (BAC) is an independent professional college that provides excellence in design education based on a learning model of concurrent academics and practice. Sustainable design plays a key role in the BAC curricula, and the Ecotopia Project is just one example of a student-led project that has given students the opportunity to explore sustainable design theory actively in the field.
The first house acquired by the HAC for the Community Green was the Curio House, a model for sustainable housing designed by BAC students for the 2009 Solar Decathlon. The Ecotopian House expands on the vision for sustainable living embodied in the Curio House, exploring sustainable design as a means to enriching community life.
